A voyage of our own

The culmination of studying Population and Immigration the Year 8 students had a Geography trip to the Voyager Maritime Museum.

Through the museum’s exhibits the students forllowed the story of migration to New Zealand by the earliest Polynesian settlers through European migration to more recent journeys.

The museum staff encouraged a hands on approach which enabled students to get a glimpse of some of the challenges faced by those early migrants.

One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity for students to participate in a journey of their own. They had an hour’s sailing on the Jane Gifford (a ketch rigged deck-scow), where they helped to hoist the sails and enjoyed a different view of the Auckland waterfront.
